Back to Korea

This is the underside of a cicada.  This three inch long monster was sitting on the screen of the window on our sixteenth floor apartment in South Korea.  The buzzing sound that these things make, especially as a group, is much "bigger" than their bodies.   Our summer break in the USA ended and we flew back "home" to the buzzing sounds of cicadas, to the heat of high humidity and the spicy food of Korea.  This blog post stands as the completion of our blog memories for the 2010-11 school year.  For the past five years we have made a memory book out of our blog using blurb.com and we start each memory book in August and end it in July.

The 2010-11 year has been a great one.  We have enjoyed so many grand expereinces together as a family and we thank God for the blessings.  It is now time to get out the camera and dive into recording memories for next year's book.  Thanks for being interested in our lives.

The Roberts Reunion

Our summer in the USA ended with a great day at the Roberts Family Reunion in Twin Falls, Idaho.  Aunt Letha (Ryan's great aunt) organized and hosted the event.  The last get together of this nature was seventeen years ago.  Becca was only six months old at that time and Sarah wasn't around yet.

The Reunion was a treasured time of reconnecting with family: aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.  It was a day full of stories and remembering.  The gathering on that day branched out from the lives of Beamon and Abby Roberts. (they were Ryan's great grandparents)  Ryan's grandfather, Ben, was Beamon's oldest son.  It was fun to see all of the Ben and Hazel Roberts kids together in one place--that included my father, Robin and his siblings.  The Reunion was a great time.

Dierkes Lake

Up the road aways from Shoshone Falls is a place called Dierkes Lake.  It is a place of docks, diving boards, jumping cliffs, ducks, geese, a sandy beach and lots of memories for Grandma and Granddad.   We had a good time sitting on the edge of the dock together, soaking our feet in the cool water and making more memories. 

Shoshone Falls

Throughout the time we were in Southern Idaho this summer the weather was beautiful and while we were there we spent lots of time sightseeing.  It won't be easy to forget the beautiful morning we spent at Shoshone Falls.  The roar of the falling water, the cool mist on our faces and the bright colors of the rainbow as the sun shone through the overspray all came together to form a lasting memory.  Along with the view of the beautiful falls, the rugged canyon walls and the meandering mighty Snake River, Becca and Sarah enjoyed the privilege of seeing a rockchuck (that is a big deal for kids living in the concrete jungles of South Korea) and a deer.  It was fun making this memory with Grandma and Granddad.

The Perrine Bridge

We met up with  Granddand and Grandma (Ryan's parents) in Twin Falls, Idaho for a few days this summer.  On our first evening in town we spent some time at the scenic overlook of the Snake River Canyon near the Perrine Bridge.  It was a windy evening (of course, it was Southern Idaho), but filled with beautiful sights and fun memories. 

The canyon spanning Perrine Bridge was awe inspiring and the colors of the rocks, trees, sagebrush, water and foilage in that area were breathtaking.  It was interesting to see what was left of Evel Kneivel's ramp from his failed attempt at jumping across the mighty Snake on a rocket cycle in the 1970s. 

A great memory of the evening included five base jumpers.  We were privileged to watch five guys wearing parachutes jump off the  side of the Perrine Bride.  It was amazing to watch them float toward the target on the canyon floor.  Fun!

 

The 50th

The main reason we all converged at Couer d'Alene this summer was to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Tom and Carol Cuffe (Dina's parents).  It was a great celebration.  The weekend was full of family time, sitting around the campfire, way too much food, two cakes and a lot of fun.

Silverwood Fun

A part of our Couer d'Alene adventure included a trip to the Silverwood Amusement Park.  It was a great day full of rollercoasters, ferris wheels, bumper cars and merrry-go-rounds.  We even had fun riding the Tilt-A-Hurl...I mean Whirl.  One of  the most enjoyable parts about Silverwood was watching little Johanna and Logan enjoy the rides and have fun times with their cousins.

 

 

 

 

 

Headed North

From Boise the Oliver/Roberts clan made the long and beautiful trip North to Couer d'Alene, Idaho.  We met up with Dina's family (the Cuffes) to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Dina's parents, Tom and Carol.  We all gathered at a campground located at the end of the lake.  Some people brought their campers, but the Roberts/Olivers stayed in camper cabins.  It was a fun time of playing volleyball, swimming, boating, sitting around the campfire and laughing.

Cupcake Wars

During the time that the Oliver's were visiting Boise the Roberts and the Olivers were invited to participate in the first ever "ChrisLizCharleeMax Cupcake Wars."  It was a cupcake decorating contest and it was intense!

The cupcakes were provided along with the materials for decorating the cupcakes.  The rules were: that within twenty minutes each team had to decorate their cupcakes using all-natural, edible items.  At the end of the time the cupcakes were judged and a winning team was chosen.  Oh, and then the cupcakes were eaten.  It was a great time!

The Olivers

We had so many fun times this summer and they all revolved around people.  In early July the Oliver family came to Boise to visit us.  They stayed in a hotel and the cousins had a blast playing together in the pool, watching to the Independence Day fireworks, going to movies and hanging out.  The twin sisters enjoyed their time together and the brother-in-laws had a good time too!
