School is taught at the Beulah Home in India and some of the children from the village come to the Beulah Home each day for school.  It was our team's privilege to assist in teaching school to both the Beulah Home children and the village children during the week that we were in India.

Late in the afternoon school would end and the "school bus" would pull up to the front of the Beulah Home to pick up the children that live in the village.  The school bus was not much bigger than a golf cart, but it would pull off the grounds carrying nearly twenty children.

It was quite a sight to see all of the kids throw their backpacks in the back of the "bus" and pile into the vehicle.  Some children stood, some sat while holding others on their lap and some even seemed to hang onto the side.  Every day it was amazing to see to school bus depart the grounds carrying its precious cargo of children waving, smiling and shouting "good bye."

TCIS musical . . . arrggh!

The TCIS musical this year is The Pirates of Penzance.  Sarah is in the production, playing the part of Mabel, one of the daughters of the Major General.

The musical is full of great acting, singing, dancing and much laughter on the part of the audience.  It is a delightful show and the TCIS students have pulled off the production nicely.

Today we had our LASA Chapel.  It is a time when all of the LASA service trip teams take a few minutes and tell the rest of the student body about their spring break trip and experience.

During our week at the Beulah Home in India a little puppy mysteriously appeared on the compound and it didn't belong to Rocky.  One of the little boys that lives at the Beulah Home attends school at one of the nearby villages.  He walks to and from school each day.  He said that on his way home from school he came across this little puppy and the puppy "followed him home."

The story seemed plausible except for the fact that the puppy was still at the nursing age and could hardly walk the distance of ten feet without plopping down for a rest.  The folks at the Beulah Home had the little boy take the puppy back to where he found him.

the beauty of India #1

The beauty of India is realized in the people that inhabit that exotic place.  It is a place of diverse culture, stark contrast and significant challenge.  Water is scarce and the weather is dry and hot  The element of need is beyond real. Yet, in the midst of it all there is beauty.

off to India

A little less than a month ago a team of thirteen of us were packing our bags and making plans to spend Spring Break in Bangalore, India.  Every year our school (TCIS) sponsors student mission/service trips to various locations throughout Asia, and Dina and I (Ryan) led a team of students (one of which was Sarah) on a trip to the Beulah Home in Bangalore.

The Beulah Home is a children's home that is a place of joy, love and fun.  It was great to see some old friends at the Beulah Home and to make some new friends too.

After the long flight from Seoul to Bangalore (with an extended layover in Bangkok) we arrived at the Beulah Home in the middle of the night.  We were exhausted and it didn't take long for us to settle into our rooms and crash.  The next morning we woke to the bright, warm sun of India and the radiant smiles of the children of the Beulah Home.

last IB recital

Have you ever been to a concert that featured solos via voice, guitar, violin, piano and ukelele?  Last week we attended Sarah's last IB Recital and the program included excellent performances on this wide variety of instruments. 

As a part of their final course assessment the students in Sarah's IB class are required to submit to the IB organization approximately 15-20 minutes of recordings of themselves performing music before and audience.  The other night, Sarah and her classmates logged their last performance for the year.

The music was great - jazz, folk, contemporary - and all performed so well.  Gentry played a nice piece on her tenor ukelele and Sarah sang two songs, one where she accompanied herself on the guitar and one vocal solo with piano accompaniment. 

It was a great night of music and memories.

 

 

bball season ends

The winter athletic season at TCIS has come to a close.  The TCIS girls' basketball team had a great season.  They ended the regular season with a 4th place finish and entered the year-end tournament on a high note and with high hopes for the tournament. 

They won their first game of the KAIAC tournament and then lost a good game against one of the top teams in the league.  The girls' played SFS in the 3rd/4th place game.  It was a close game with lots of hard play and a good effort by both teams.  SFS ended up winning the game.  TCIS played well in the tournament and we are proud of their 4th place finish.  More than that, the TCIS girls' walked away with the Sportsmanship Award for the season.  This award was voted on by all of the coaches in the league.  We are proud of our Lady Dragons and their terrific coaches: David Miller and Peter Shim.

Sarah had a fantastic senior season serving the team as the co-captain (with her buddy Gentry Miller), scoring lots of points and bringing home the All Conference medal for TCIS.  This was the last sports season for Dina and me (Ryan) to sit in the stands and cheer for our  girls.  Where has the time gone?  It has been so fun!  We thank God for the blessings and the rich memories.
