Merry Christmas to all of our family and friends. We are enjoying the warm, sunny beaches of Guam this Christmas, but that isn't what makes this time so special. It is the privilege of spending this time and enjoying this experience together as a family. The days of having little ones that wake up before sunrise
on Christmas morning have passed us by all too quickly. Yet we still treasure the memories. We thank God for the opportunity make some more memories this Christmas.
Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, but more than that it is a place of hope. Hope in the midst of challenges, questions, failures, disappointments, loss and change. Every year Christmas, with all of it glitz, glitter, lights, decorations and gifts comes and reminds us to celebrate. We celebrate the birth of Christ, but I think Jesus wants us to celebrate more than that.
At Christmas God wants us to celebrate and recognize his great love for us.
The angel came to the shepherds and announced,
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord."
". . . a Savior has been born to you." To YOU--that means you and me. We are inclined to say that Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus, but in reality we should be saying that Christmas is all about the birth of hope for humankind--a hope that is borne in the immense love of God.
Every year, Christmas comes and in the midst of all our challenges, questions, failures, disappointments, loss and change we are reminded that there is hope. So we pull out our trees, decorations, tinsel, gifts, eggnog and truffles and celebrate. At Christmas we celebrate the coming of the God of hope and love into our world. All the while--the God who sent his son into the world is celebrating us. Merry Christmas!
