Last Sunday morning David and I took off on a bike ride--not sure of where we were going. Here in South Korea it is a challenge to read the signs as they are all written in the Korean language. So, if a sign says, "do not enter" or "dead end," we don't know it, so we pay no heed and proceed.
We enjoyed an 18 kilometer adventure the other day that found us exploring a vacated historical center/museum, riding up trails that dead-ended in fields where people were working (they gave us some strange looks), and going up a mountain trail that wasn't designed for biking.
Once you get a certain distance up a mountain, you have to finish and go to the top. So, when the trail got too rough and steep to ride we left our bikes along the trail and hiked the rest of the way up. At the top of the mountain we found military bunkers and a great view of the city of Daejeon. We also found a helipad at the top of the mountain--a definitive sign that there were no roads and no ridable trails in the vicinity. It was a hard climb to the top, but worth it.
We did come across another hiker on the top of the mountain. He must have wondered about our bike helmets, because it was obvious that there was no bike access in that area. He probably thought we were playing military games.
An hour and a half after we started the ride we found ourselves sitting in a Starbucks reflecting on our adventure and talking about how we need to learn to read, and understand the Korean Language.
I'm jealous!
