Sometimes we go on big adventures to the circus or to Japan but most of the time we stay "home". If we take a moment to look around during each and every day, the sights therein have the makings of adventure. The other day I exited our apartment building and found myself in the midst of some neighborhood boys playing a game that involved plastic swords and "transformer" toy robots. It looked like fun. I crashed their party and we swapped some English and Korean words and some high fives and I got them all to line up for a picture on the steps of our apartment building. Adventure!
The pile of trash that Sarah is pointing at is a common sight along the neighborhood streets of Daejeon. South Korea is a beautiful country with beautiful people but I wouldn't call the city streets beautiful. I try to get a little exercise and run the streets and sidewalks of Daejeon in the early mornings. The roads and sidewalks are as rough and varied as an obstacle course and on trash days the miscellaneous piles make the trip even more challenging.
You will notice the different colors of the trash bags in the picture. Each neighborhood or "dong" has its own color and labeled trash bag. It is illegal to discard trash in anything other than these designated bags. The local stores sell the bags and they don't come cheap. Trash?.....Adventure!
how fun to find adventure in the ordinary, how impressive for you to appreciate it. we cannot wait yo visit you next winter with johanna. she just started waving goodbye to her daddy in the morning. she is SO excited to see you all soon. we love you.
