An otherwise full evening unexpectedly opened up--Becca's piano lessons were cancelled at the last minute so we decided to go for a walk around our "neighborhood." We had to get out of the apartment on this very warm and clear evening.
There are no quiet streets here in Daejeon. With so many people packed into such a small place there is always someone walking, biking or driving down the streets or sidewalks. Most of the streets are very narrow and have very rough, uneven walking areas--the streets are definitely not handicapped accessible.
On a walk in Idaho we would see beautifully manicured lawns, two or three kids out on their bikes and maybe one car meandering through the neighborhood. On our walk in Daejeon we passed by many small stores, fruit stands, sidewalk vendors (Ryan bought a cell phone belt clip for 5000 won) and lots and lots of people walking the streets. It is not uncommon for many of the Korean teenagers and children that we pass by to "try out" their English on us. So we often times hear a sheepish attempt at "hello", or "hi" from a passersby.
On the last leg of our walk we had to navigate through what the TCIS staff call "kamikazee corner." This is a "T" in the street near the school where there is a traffic light that they might as well take down and save the electricity because no one pays any mind to it. The corner is crazy--there is no right of way, no yielding to oncoming traffic, no speed limit and definitely no yielding to pedestrians. As you can see from the picture it is a busy place.
It was a nice evening walk.
