The weather cooperated with us for the most part in Seattle and we were able to visit the Space Needle and get a good view of the Seattle area. Becca and Sarah have never been to Seattle before and this was their first view of the Space Needle and one of the most beautiful cities in the Northwest.
To get to the Space Needle we took the monorail from the downtown area to the Needle. We had some fun and made some memories "together" at the Space Needle.
Seattle is a city that Becca and Sarah have never been to, so we decided to spend a few days there before we settled in for our summer break in Boise, Idaho. Seattle is a beautiful city. Two of the three days that we spent there were sunny!
We enjoyed connecting with our friend Virgina Hood in Seattle. She used to live in South Korea, but now she lives in Portland and she was up in Seattle visiting family and she took the time to visit with us. It was great to see her and to catch up her life. Becca and Sarah love Virginia--she is a good friend.
We enjoyed taking in the sights of Pike's Market and we enjoyed (and needed) the caffeine offered at the first Starbucks Coffee Shop (established 1971). We decided that Seattle is a great city to visit when returning to the USA from Asia as the Starbucks Coffee Shops on every corner are a great answer to addressing the debilitating effects of jet lag.
Our first stop over in the USA included a visit with our friends, Bud and Virginia in Lynnwood, Washington. Bud and Virginia are an amazing couple that we became friends with in the mid 1990s when we were living in Baker City, Oregon. They are both right at 90 years of age and they have been married 67 years. Yes, I said 67 years!
Bud and Virginia are committed Christ followers and have served most of their lives as ministers within the Young Life Organization. Both Bud and Virginia are serious about Bible memorization and about disciplining men, women and teenagers in their walk with Jesus Christ.
It was such a joy to see them, to hear about their lives and to remember some of the fun times that we have spent with them over the years. Our memories included: fishing trips, lots of biscuits and gravy, Bible Studies, work around the church, lessons in canning, laughter and warm friendship.
When there is talk of Saints for the Lord, Bud and Virginia come to mind.
The long awaited "last day of school" finally arrived for Dina, Becca and Sarah (not for Ryan, his work never ends....poor Ryan). Becca and Sarah pulled out their sunglasses and had no trouble transitioning into summer. They kicked it off with a twelve hour sleep-in and then they pulled out the luggage and began packing for their trip back to the USA for a few weeks.
The first stop on the summer schedule included a visit with some friends and some sight-seeing in Seattle, Washington and then on to Boise, Idaho. Summer is here!
In early June we enjoyed seeing our friends Colette and Bethany in South Korea. They made the long trek to Daejeon to see their daughter and sister, Brenna Loeber (and Landon too). Brenna works at TCIS as a Student Life Minister and her husband teaches fifth graders in the elementary school.
It was fun to see Colette and Bethany around the school for a few days and we loved the chance to enjoy a couple of meals with them and to show them just a little bit of the city where we live. Of course, we introduced them to our good friend, JaeYoung.
We love having visitors in South Korea!
This week Becca and Sarah are in the midst of finals week. The high school seniors graduated last Friday and now the underclassmen have to finish strong with final exams. Last Friday before graduation they had the high school awards assembly.
The school gives out awards to students in each of the four grades in the high school (9-12) and they give awards to students that have exemplified aspects of the ESLR's (Expected Schoolwide Learning Results). The ESLR categories are the same as the International Baccalaureate learner outcomes. They are: Inquirer, Knowledgeable, Thinker, Communicator, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-taker, Balanced and Reflective.
Becca received the "Balanced" award for the 10th grade this year. We are proud of her as she does brilliantly in academics, sports, music, relationships, leadership, ministry, and spiritual growth. Her friend Joe got a 9th grade award. I got a picture of him too.
